Why Join the Challenge?

Ecological literacy is the ability to understand the natural systems that make life on earth possible. To be ecoliterate means understanding the principles of organization of ecological communities and using those principles for creating sustainable human communities. Each day people make decisions that affect the environment, whether they are getting ready to go to work, preparing dinner, or buying products for the house or garden. It’s imperative that the public learn and understand how their actions and lifestyle intersect with the environment.

Social Sharing

Please join our Facebook Group and share your observations there. If you don't 'do' social media, don't despair! There are other ways to share.

Draw in your nature journal, take a photo, and email to us.

Hashtag your observations with #kittitasnaturechallenge on whatever social media you choose. If you are old school, take photos with your film camera and bring them to a gathering that we hope to have in person at the end of the challenge!

What Is the Challenge?

KEEN is challenging our community to find, track, name, identify, journal, and record all the nature they can find during April and May 2022!

Each week has a new theme and challenge and prizes will be awarded each week!

  • Lichen and mushrooms

  • Bugs/insects

  • Mammals

  • Sign/tracks

  • Flowering plants

  • Clouds/climate/weather

  • Stars

  • And more!

How Do I Participate?

Fill out the registration form here and consider a donation to get a hat and support KEEN's work.

Each week we'll email the theme and suggestions for where to go to find
the most diverse and interesting species.

Easy hikes and walks will be promoted with an eye toward outdoor time suitable for all ages.

How Do I Track My Observations?

We have set up a 'project' in iNaturalist. You can download the app on your favorite gadget so that you have it with you when you are observing.

Join our iNaturalist project.

If you prefer to draw/illustrate or otherwise record your observations on paper, put together a journal and go for it! You can share your observations and drawings on our Facebook group page or by sending an email to keen@keenetwork.org
